How to Read an AI Girlfriend Review Before You Pay

Search for the best AI girlfriend app and you will get a page of listicles that all agree, all rank the same five products, and all link out with a tracking parameter. Some of them are real. A reviewer signed up, paid, chatted for a week, hit the limits and wrote down what happened. Most of them are a rewritten features page with a score bolted on the end, published by someone who never opened the product.

You cannot tell the two apart from the star rating, because both use stars. You can tell them apart from the details, and the details are easy to check once you know what to look for. This matters more in this category than in most: you are about to hand a subscription and a fair amount of private conversation to a company you found through a link.

The One Test That Beats Every Checklist

Ask a single question about the review in front of you: does it describe something the writer could only know by paying?

A features page can tell you a product generates images. Only someone who used it can tell you what it feels like to ask for one in the middle of a conversation, which is a different experience from opening a separate generator and pasting a prompt. The AI girlfriend review site AI Chat Companions put its finger on exactly that distinction, calling the in-chat image request "the feature that makes HeyGF feel different from a plain text companion." That sentence describes a moment in a conversation. You cannot write it from a screenshot.

The same goes for tests that cost time rather than money. AI Girlfriend Coach, an independent AI girlfriend review site, runs a seven-day memory check across the apps on his roster: mention a detail on day one, come back on day seven with a vague cue, and see whether the character retrieves the right memory or blends two unrelated ones together. You cannot fake that from a landing page. Either the writer waited a week or he did not.

Five Checks That Take Two Minutes

Once you have read the review for lived detail, run these five checks. They are quick, and they knock out most of the page.

1. A Named Reviewer and a Real Date

Look for a byline that belongs to a person and a date that says when the testing happened, not just when the post was published. Companion apps ship changes constantly. A review of a model that was replaced in March is a historical document, not a buying guide. Sites that take this seriously show both a first-tested date and a last-updated date.

2. A Published Method

The good sites tell you how the score was built before they show you the score. When the method is public you can disagree with the weighting, which is the point. When there is no method, the number means nothing.

3. Limits That Are Named, Not Hinted At

No app in this category is right for everyone, and a review that will not say who it is wrong for is selling, not reviewing. Look for a specific, checkable statement rather than a token negative in a pros and cons box. "Best if you want X, look elsewhere if you want Y" is useful. "May not be for everyone" is filler.

4. Failure Cases, Not Just Highlights

Anyone can screenshot the good generation. The useful reviews show what happens on a bad day: the character breaking tone, an image that does not match the description, a memory that comes back wrong. The AI companion review site CompanionGuide is unusually specific about the video half of this category, describing the difference between video that moves and video "jittering through three frames per second," which is a thing you only write after watching a lot of bad clips.

5. Disclosure

Affiliate commission is normal here and it is not a scandal. Almost every review site in this category earns something when you sign up. The problem is not the commission, it is hiding it, because a site that will not tell you about the money will not tell you about the testing either. Read the disclosure, then read the review again knowing what it is.

When the Reviews Disagree, Read the Disagreement

The instinct is to average the scores. The better move is to read where they split, because the split usually maps to what each reviewer values.

We see this in our own coverage. Two reviewers weigh the same product differently: one scores photo realism above everything and calls HeyGF.ai's pictures the most realistic on his roster, another builds a ten-category rubric where the free tier and the ease of setup carry weight alongside the images. Both descriptions are accurate. They are answers to two different questions, and which one matters depends on what you actually want from a companion.

That is the useful output of a review, and it is the one an averaged score destroys. Find the reviewer whose priorities match yours, then read that person carefully instead of reading ten sites shallowly.

The Three Things That Are Hardest to Fake

If you only have time to verify three claims yourself, make them these.

Memory. Tell her something specific and slightly odd in your first session. Not "I like hiking," which any model can pattern match, but a concrete detail with a name and a date attached. Come back two days later and refer to it obliquely. A companion with real long-term memory retrieves it. A companion with a sliding context window either invents something adjacent or asks you to remind her. Visual consistency. Ask for two pictures in different settings. If the face changes between them, you are looking at a generic image model with a prompt attached, not a character. What the plan actually includes. Most apps in this category separate the subscription from the media currency, so the advertised monthly number buys the chat and the pictures come out of a second balance. Before you subscribe anywhere, check what that balance is, what it buys and whether the plan you are looking at includes enough of it for how you intend to use the product. Run the Tests Yourself

Reviews are a shortcut, not a substitute. Twenty minutes inside an app tells you more than twenty minutes of reading about it, because the thing you are buying is a feeling and nobody can score that for you.
