Multilingual AI Girlfriend: Chat in Spanish or German

Lukas lives in Hamburg. His English is fine for work emails. It is less fine at midnight, when he wants to say something that matters.

One night he gave up and wrote to Anja in German. Her reply came back in German, with a question about his day.

He answered in German too, and kept going until one in the morning.

A Multilingual AI Girlfriend Answers in Spanish or German

There is nothing to set up. Write to her in Spanish and she answers in Spanish. The same goes for German, Italian, French, Portuguese and many more.

The setting behind this is called "Language," and it starts on "Auto (match how I write)." Its description reads: "She replies in whatever language you write in."

The app's menus and buttons are in English. Your chat does not have to be.

Keep Her in One Language

Some people mix languages without thinking about it. For them, it helps to pin one.

Marco grew up speaking Italian at home and English at work. On Auto, his chats with Bianca followed whatever he typed last. After a long day he would answer in English without noticing, and the chat turned English with him.

So he opened the "Language" setting and picked "Italiano." Each option is listed in its own name, so you will also find "Español," "Deutsch," "Français" and "Português" there. Now Bianca stays in Italian, even when Marco slips into English.

If you want her to change languages, ask her to switch, or switch the setting back to Auto.

You can set this in two places:

• For one chat. Open that chat's settings.
• For every chat. On the Settings page, look for "Default chat settings." You need to be signed in. These apply to all your chats unless you change one chat on its own.

Voice Notes and Photos in Your Language

Ask for a voice note in your own words and she sends her reply as audio, in the language of your chat. "Con tu voz" works as well as "say it out loud." Voice notes cost coins. Text never does.

Calls: Pick the Language Before You Dial

The "Language" setting covers calls as well. Its description for a pinned language reads: "Her messages and her voice calls, both." With a language pinned, she speaks it for the whole call.

Without one, she may open the call in English. Start talking in your language and she switches to it.

Type With Your Voice

If your browser supports it, the message box has a microphone button. Tap it and talk. Your words appear in the box, and you can fix them before you send. Tap the button again when you are done, and the text stays in the box.

While it listens, a small chip next to your words shows which language it is listening for. Tap it to change the language. This is handy on a phone, where typing accents and umlauts is slow.

• Bianca Moretti, 31, owns a beauty salon in Milan, loves Italo disco and cooks big Sunday lunches. Try: "Allora, cosa cucini domenica?" (So, what are you cooking on Sunday?)
• Inés Gallo, 36, is an architect from Argentina who collects antique books. Try: "¿Cuál es tu edificio favorito de tu ciudad?" (What is your favorite building in your city?)

Where she is from does not decide what language she chats in. Lucia will chat in English if you do.
