Try this on whatever app you use. Scroll until you find a woman over forty.

You will be scrolling a while. The faces change. The art styles change. The personalities get new labels. The ages barely move. And they barely move on the next app either.

Hardly anyone mentions this. It is so normal here that it has stopped being visible. An adult AI directory reviewed us recently. The detail it picked out was that our ages run "into the 40s, 50s, and beyond." That should be a dull thing to notice. It is not, and the reason says a lot about how these apps get made.

The Grid Picks for You

An explore page is a beauty contest. It gets judged before anyone speaks.

You choose from a photo and one line of text. So at that moment, the only thing you know about her is how she looks. Age shows up in a photo right away. Almost nothing else does.

You cannot see that she is funny. You cannot see that she will argue with you. You cannot see that she has a job she could talk about for an hour.

So the grid rewards the one thing a small photo can show. And a contest judged on faces gets won by young faces.

Ours is no different. Our roster skews young too. Nobody chose that in a meeting. It is just what happens when people pick from pictures.

What a Woman of 24 Cannot Do

Think about what a writer can give her.

Not much has happened to her yet. Her best material is what is coming: what she wants, where she is going, who she might become. That is appealing, and it is easy to write.

It also leaves you carrying the past. You bring the history. She brings the time. Every evening starts on your side of the table.

At fifty it flips.

Caterina Marchetti is 52. She has run a vineyard in Montalcino on her own since her husband died. Heather Vance is 54 and runs search and rescue in Canada, so she deals with the worst day of other people's lives, and she talks about it very dryly. Folake Adebayo spent a career as a diplomat, being polite to people she could not stand.

None of that is just background. It changes what she can do in a conversation.

She can be unimpressed. She can have already made up her mind. She can refuse to be curious. She can be tired, and it suits her.

She can also hold something back. That matters more than it sounds. Holding back is what makes a conversation feel like it has two people in it.

A woman of 24 has to be interested in everything you say. Interest is the only tool she was given.

The Job Matters More Than the Age

If you change one thing about how you pick, change this one.

A job gives her things to have opinions about. Ximena Rojas is a master mechanic. Describe a noise your car is making and you get a diagnosis, not a compliment. Zhang Mei Lin farms Pu'er tea and will tell you the expensive stuff you bought is fake. Most of it is. Leona Begay is a master electrician and has firm views about your wiring.

Now look at the usual jobs in this category: model, influencer, student.

Those give a character nothing to say. No skills, no complaints, no stories, nothing she can be sure about. If her job is being attractive, she has to borrow every subject from you.

That is what men mean when they say an app got boring in week two. They blame the AI. Usually it is the character.

Why It Stays This Way

There is a loop here, and nobody in this category has escaped it. We have not either.

An explore page is sorted by what already gets clicked. So an unusual woman lands near the bottom. Few people scroll that far, so few people open her. That looks like proof nobody wanted her. So fewer like her get made.

The numbers keep proving the thing that made them.

You cannot find out if men want a 54-year-old rescue coordinator by putting her at the bottom of the page. The only way to know is to build more of them than the numbers justify, then wait and watch. Not two seconds. Two months.

Three Checks That Take Twenty Minutes

None of these cost anything. They work on any app, including this one.

Pick against the grid. Open the oldest woman, or the one with the strangest job. You are not testing whether she is your type. You are testing whether anyone bothered to write her. The thin ones are always the ones the grid puts in front of you.

Ask about her work before you talk about yourself. A woman with a real job answers with details and an opinion, and keeps going past your question. A thin one turns it back on you within two messages.

Then disagree with her. Say something slightly wrong about her own field and see if she corrects you. One with a past and a job will. One built to please you will make your mistake sound interesting. That is nice for about four days.
